Indicator guide · SP.POP.GROW

Population growth
by country

Annual population growth rate. The table keeps each country's reported year visible so stale and current observations are not treated as equivalent.

What it helps answer

Reading the signal

Summarises how births, deaths and net migration changed the resident population during the year.

Before comparing

Important limits

The same national rate can mask very different age structures and regional patterns. Migration shocks and census revisions can create abrupt changes.

Source definition

Population growth (annual %)

Annual population growth rate for year t is the exponential rate of growth of midyear population from year t-1 to t, expressed as a percentage. Population is based on the de facto definition of population, which counts all residents regardless of legal status or citizenship.
